After leaping straight to the Allagash Grand Cru last night, I’ve decided to stick with Allagash for a second night and try the brewery’s flagship beer, Allagash White.

allagashwhiteAllagash grew around this beer. According to the Brewery History page on the Allagash website:

Allagash began with the release of its Allagash White, modeled after the traditional “White” beers of Belgium. Also referred to as “wit” beers, they get their unique flavor from the use of wheat in place of barley, Curacao orange peel and the careful sprinkling of coriander and other spices. Allagash combined these ingredients with their very own proprietary Belgian yeast strain to create the remarkably unique and refreshing beer that is today their flagship brand. Allagash White developed a strong cult following around the Portland area where it was available at selected draft accounts. Due to its immediate success, the beer was soon made available in 12-ounce six-packs throughout the state of Maine.

The bottle includes visual instructions for how to pour the beer, swirl the bottle, and then empty the remaining yeast into the glass. For once I actually followed the directions, and the frothy pour of yeast made this lemon-yellow beer extremely hazy and textured, with a thin white head.

The aroma is very enticing — lemon and orange, coriander, spice. But the taste was a pleasant surprise — very mellow, sweet citrus, lemon and orange, slipping to a lightly bitter finish of well-balanced spice. Everything about this beer is soft, from the silky mouthfeel to the spice on the finish. Even the alcohol percentage is moderate — a very sessionable 5% ABV.

From the Allagash website description:

Our interpretation of a traditional Belgian wheat beer, Allagash White is unique and truly refreshing. Brewed with a generous portion of wheat and our own special blend of spices, this beer is light and slightly cloudy in appearance, with a spicy aroma. Overall, it is a beer that is very drinkable and smooth any time of the year.

I found the White to be crisp, delicious, and extremely drinkable; it seems the 12 ounces disappeared far too quickly.

The Allagash Dubble and Tripel are waiting for me, but I think I’ll set them aside until I taste a few more Belgian brews. Tomorrow is IPA Monday, but I’m planning Chimay for Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday. Stay tuned!
