Bohemia

This “One Beer A Day” thing really seems to be confusing the resort staff here in Mexico. I’ve developed a reputation as the guy who interrogates staff about beer, and doesn’t seem to drink any of it.
At lunch today, I explained to the bartender that I simply don’t want to drink any Mexican beer I’ve had in the past. We went down his beer list and disqualified everything. Twenty minutes later, he unexpectedly walked up to me with a Bohemia — I have no idea where he got it. Perhaps he went to another restaurant, but for all I know he ran home and opened his refrigerator.
The turn of events had me ecstatic; I truly had not tasted Bohemia before. The bartender told me, “It’s like a Corona, but better.” That’s a pretty broad statement, but not far off the mark.
To set the stage: the air temperature was in the low 80s, the sun was shining down on me through light clouds, and I’d just come from a deep tissue massage. Not a bad situation, frankly. I was pretty relaxed and warm, and I’m sure all these elements combined to make my first sip of Bohemia that much better.
Bohemia tastes like a German or a Czech lager, but “hecho en Mexico”. It’s a very drinkable pilsner. The sweet citrus nose is complimented by lightly bitter hops.
The bartender kept checking to make sure I liked the beer. He seemed both relieved and triumphant — emotions that gave way to perplexity when I declined his offer of a second round.
Even in Mexico, some rules cannot be broken: one beer a day; no more, no less; and no repeats.

I’m enjoying your reviews! It looks like you have a number of quality brews to work through this year. Most of the Mexican beers I’ve tried haven’t really done it for me. Negra Modelo being an exception, and the occasional Dos Equis Amber.
I look forward to tagging along for the ride.

Probably the best Mexican beer, I’ve had. And this is from someone who went through a major mexican beer phase in 2004.
I hear tell there is a dark version of Bohemia…
What is with Mexico and having a dark version of thier lagers?

Damien, good to hear from you. This should be a fun ride – I’m not even a full month in and it has already been a rewarding experience. Funny you mention Negra Modelo – that’s yesterday’s beer, I’m going to try to get the post and picture up today.

Well, the staff at the resort DID bend over backwards for you!

I went to a Mexican restaurant in the thriving metropolis of downtown Bloomington and after scouring the menu I stumbled across the beer list. The name Bohemia caught my eye, and I remembered reading your review of it, “It’s like a Corona, only better” and the comment, “Probably the best mexican beer I’ve had.” I usually don’t drink beer with my meals at restaurants but with this prior recommendation I couldn’t pass it up. At first taste the beer tasted very similar to what I remember of a Corona, but after the flavor of my beef burrito and chicken enchilada mixed with the Bohemia in my mouth, I couldn’t stop talking about how good the beer tasted. It amazes me how much of a difference the simple act of sharing your taste buds with another substance makes in the accumulative taste of the beer. This could be for the positive or negative, depending on the beer. And for Bohemia and Mexican food, it is most definitely a positive.

Scott, great comment, and I’m glad I didn’t lead you astray. Pairing a beer with food can bring out the better qualities in both the beer AND the food. Bohemia has a “corn” malt flavor, which I imagine tied nicely with your meal — or vice versa.
BTW, I’m thinking about instituting a “Comment of the Week” — so far your story easily takes the top spot this week!

Diego: try bevmo.com – they stock Bohemia and I believe they would ship to California.
