Buzzards Bay Black Lager
By
Drinking a black lager makes me think of the movie Spaceballs. Don’t you remember Mel Brooks’ Yogurt talking about black lager?
Of course you do! He said: “May the Schwarz-bier with you!”
I’ve had Sam Adams Black Lager before, and Sarnac Black Forest is waiting patiently in the Fridge. Both, like Buzzards Bay Black Lager, are a style of Schwarzbier — similar to a porter or a stout, but tamer and not as strongly flavored.
(Don’t feel bad if you didn’t know what Schwarzbier was until just this moment. I had to look it up on Wikipedia.)
Buzzards Bay Black Lager is a fine, tasty black beer. Mine poured a three-fingered mocha head that rested in my pint glass, the very embodiment of thick and lazy. There was a lightly toasty aroma like a porter, but I had to strain my nose to pull it out.
The color? You guessed it.
The Black Lager had a light body and a soft, almost-but-not-quite creamy mouthfeel. There’s an element of sweet espresso, and a slightly bitter aftertaste at the back of the tongue to balance the toasted malt sweetness lingering at the other end.
Per the website for Buzzards Bay Black Lager:
This beer’s looks are deceiving! It may look like a stout, but your first sip will tell you otherwise. Brewed in an easy-drinking tradition, our Black Lager looks dark and dangerous but tastes crisp and smooth. It takes a seriously skilled (or simply crazed) brewer to have the know-how to finesse dark roasted malt and noble hops into this amazing beer.
I’m impressed with the beer — nice pour, nice head, pleasant aroma and extremely easy to drink. There’s just a little bit left in my glass, and I’m loathe to finish it because there are 11 months left before I can drink it again.
In the meantime, it’s leaving me nice and toasty. It only has a 5.1% ABV, but you know what they say — never underestimate the power of the Schwarzbier.
