Yesterday, I enjoyed Colorado’s first microbrewery. Today, I sampled beer from the first microbrewery in New England.

weeheavyThe D.L. Geary Brewing Company was founded in 1986 in Portland, ME, building a brewery around its flagship Pale Ale and influences from Scotland and England.

Geary’s Wee Heavy Scottish Ale is described on the brewery’s website as simply:

A Scottish ale with a rich roasted maltiness blended with mellow hoppiness, and an alcohol by volume of 8%.

Succinct and to the point. I’ll try to take a cue from their copywriter and keep tonight’s article brief.

This Scottish Ale poured dark brown with red highlights. Its head was narrow and brief, leaving behind almost no lacing — typical of many high ABV beers.

Wee Heavy had a fragrantly roasted, malty aroma that was rich with alcohol. Maybe halfway through the glass, I picked up hint of sweet, dark fruit hiding behind the roasted malt.

The beer has a very full and chalky mouthfeel. Roasted malt taste makes its first impression quickly and dominates the flavor, with sweet malt rounding out the senses. If there’s peat in this beer, it’s peaking around the corners and hiding in the shadows. On the finish, the richness fades and warms into a warm bitterness.

Beam me up, Scotty, but take it easy — since I started drinking this beer I’ve gotten a wee heavy!

You ever going to catch up on January? By my count, you’re shy 4 days :D

Wondered when someone would call me out on that! Yes, I intend to catch up — but I’m just trying to keep up with the day to day volume right now. Traveling makes it difficult to write — and once I get more than a day behind it’s killer to catch up. Is it really only 4 days? That’s not too bad — I just caught up on the 8 days I missed to due to Easter and travel to Texas. I believe I’m still missing two days during my trip to New York and two days in Mexico, both of which were in January. But I’ve never missed a day of beer drinking! One of the posts I’m missing is a beer I drank at 9am while I was checking out of the hotel in Mexico – I calculated the travel time, and realized I wouldn’t actually get back into my house until nearly midnight. So instead of gambling on what I might find at the airport, I drank one of the Mexican beers I was packing into my suitcase!
