MoJo India Pale Ale

A “trippy” IPA seemed required on an IPA Monday like today, and the colorful label on Boulder Beer Company’s Mojo IPA fit the bill.
Boulder Beer Company boasts the 43rd brewing license in the country (receiving it in 1979) and was the first microbrewery licensed in Colorado. They originally focused on English-style ales, but branched into bigger, bolder styles starting with a beer called “Hazed & Infused”. Hazed is intense, aromatic, and hoppy — or so the Boulder Beer website claims, as I haven’t had the pleasure of trying it. They designed bold, colorful packaging for Hazed to make it stand out from their other beers, and the Boulder Beer “Looking Glass Series” was born.
Mojo IPA is the fourth beer released in the Looking Glass Series. The label contains the following definition:
Mo-Jo: 1: A magic spell or charm; magical power; 2. Herbaceous ale that summons hop attacks.
It continues:
Our journey through the Looking Glass takes a sharp turn beyond the traditional IPA . . . big, bold and fearless. Light in color with intense hop aroma, MoJo’s “mojo” lies in the power of the Amarillo hops. Fresh and crisp with a slight citrus finish, this brew has become a staff favorite.
I’m always pleased with a bottle’s label description matches the actual beer inside so nicely!
MoJo India Pale Ale poured a pale gold with soft caramel highlights, producing a small head of tightly packed white bubbles. It was a touch hazy, making my tulip glass refract light like an amber crystal ball. The aroma is heavily dosed with strong, grassy hops.
The taste follows the aroma — fresh, crisp hops crash in, flexing their bitter muscles for a few seconds before fading into a citrusy, grapefruit finish. The citrus seems to appear out of the ether, but after a few sips I realized they weren’t completely unannounced. While the herbal hops are crushing your tongue, concentrated points of citrus bitterness pepper down — tasting tart and sweet compared to the sustained bitter attack. There’s also a fair amount of caramel and wheat malt to balance the bitterness and round out the taste with some light, sweet highlights.
MoJo IPA is pretty tasty and not overly complicated. It sets out to wipe your tongue with hops and leave you smiling — and for me, that’s Mission Accomplished. The beer clocks in at 6.8% ABV and 69 IBU.
