pacificoFor the rest of the week, the BeerADay.net blog is operating in Mexico. I’d be doing us all a sad injustice if I failed to post about Mexican beer and, as a bonus, tequila.

First off — it’s beautiful here in Cabo San Lucas. Warm, welcoming, and not a bit of snow. I really don’t have much more to report, because I just got in a few hours ago after a soap opera of a flight delay. (I’ll write more about that story in the “Open Bar” section of the Forum.)

Because of the delay, I didn’t have a chance to be picky about my beer for the day. The resort I’m staying at seems only to stock schlocky Mexican beer — Sol, Negra Modelo, Corona, etc. I’m hoping I can make a special request with the Concierge tomorrow — or make a run to a beer store for a few singles.

My first night in Mexico included a glass of Pacifico, a Grupo Modelo beer. If nothing else, it’s taught me that my taste in beer has improved less than a month into this project.

I used to down Pacifico, Negra Modelo, Corona, and Dos Equis, thinking them quite fine. But my first sip of the lackluster Pacifico made me rethink everything.

Nothing going on with Pacifico. I had initially declined the lime the bartender offered me, but quickly requested one to add some flavor. There’s a flat, corny malt. Had I been drinking the beer in the high heat of the afternoon, I’m sure I would be remarking upon how refreshing it is. But I drank it on the beach, next to a roaring fire, at a cool 10pm.

In fact, the beer would have been a complete waste had the waitstaff not decided to strongly encourage me to sip some reposado tequila. The tequila didn’t exactly make the beer taste better — but you could argue that it kicked in just in time to make me forget how bad the beer was.

More on tequila toward the end of this week. On Saturday, I’ve scheduled a premium tequila tasting. With any luck I’ll be able to discuss tequila with some knowledge after the class.

Is this your first bad beer review?
Pacifico is pretty tasty as long as you’re eating mexican food. As far as just sitting around and drinking beer on the beach, it has to be at least 80 degrees before that stuff tastes good.

Might be my most negative review so far. On the whole, I buy beer I think I’m going to like, from sources that have proven to stock good beer, and the result has been consistently above average.

What about the Coors… would you rate that higher than the pacifico?

You wouldn’t find me reaching for a Pacifico during a football game — score goes to Coors.
