mocha-porter-labelWhen I heard that Marc & Aimee were reviewing a Cappuccino Stout today, I decided a Mocha Porter would make the perfect pairing.

But after reading their review, I’m pleased to report that I had a much better experience with my Mocha Porter from Rogue than they had with the Cappuccino Stout from Lagunitas.

Rogue’s Mocha Porter whipped up a frothy head worthy of a cappuccino, but with all the strength and staying power of a double espresso shot. A full five minutes after pouring this beer, it still held a thick, mocha-colored head that had only slightly receded. Where it pulled back, the Mocha Porter left behind an intricate patchwork of lacing. The beer itself was a deep, dark brown — held to the light, you get just the slightest rosy aura.

rogue-mocha-porterThis beer has a nice, chocolate-coffee aroma — rich but not overly-sweet, roasted but not too dark. Combined with the creamy head, I have no idea how I managed to wait five minutes before taking my first sip!

Rogue Mocha porter is as thick and smooth as Ruben Studdard. The taste is sweet chocolate on the front, quickly fading to roasted coffee through the swallow, finally finishing with a soft, warming bitterness. It’s hard to tell where the chocolate quits and the coffee takes over, but the beer is rich and creamy throughout.

The strong head and complex flavor were likely helped along by the temperature at which I served the Mocha Porter — about 50 degrees. I could easily (and quite happily) drink several of these. And at 5.3% ABV, I could get away with it, too — provided I hadn’t pledged to limit myself to just one beer a day for the rest of the year.

This IS a dandy. You can only get it in big bottles at the Theme Park, though. That means it wants to dump brew through that chip in my mug. So it has to be done in two pours. Its really hard not to chug this because its such and easy drinking thing. When i had it, I didn’t wash the mug and let it sit out over night. The next day I was able to “peel” the head’s remains off the side of the mug.

I hope the “Theme Park” is a beer store, I LOVE the name if it is. Yeah, I’ve enjoyed java porters before — but for combining coffee and chocolate, this is the best chocolate coffee porter I’ve had so far. Though I have to say, I’m genuinely thrilled by a few of the coffee stouts I have coming up.

The “Theme Park” is the Big Red on College, I call it the Theme Park because it has a carnival scene painted on the side facing the road. It also has the widest selection of the Big Reds and sells more single bottles of beer than the others.

When I got this beer it tasted like it was way overly hopped. I couldn’t taste any chocolate or coffee. My home brewing experience has taught me that time saves all, and six months later this was a phenomenal beer. I think Rogue should pull back on the hops for most of the consumers who get this within weeks of shipping from the brewery. I love their pacman yeast and appreciate the hops in most of the other brews including dead guy but this one you need to let the other flavors shine. If you get a young pack like I did, shelve it and it will be great in a few months.
