Dear readers, you’ve been so patient as I lament the sad state of what passes for wit beer among many breweries. Many of the Whites I’ve tasted have been boring — a hint of spice at best, or maybe the suggestion of orange peel.
Much like being trapped at a pun convention, will I be endlessly bombarded by unsatisfying Wit?
No, thankfully. Leave it to Flying Dog to quell my complaints.
Woody Creek White is a Belgian-style Wit Beer brewed with bitter orange peel and coriander — and they mean it. The spice is clear even while pouring.
The beer poured a soft, oh-so-hazy, golden yellow with a boisterous white head. This murky beer is laden with bric-a-brac, from tiny suspensions to sizable sediment. Some of the smaller bits stayed suspended while the rest settled slowly to the bottom of the glass.
Woody Creek has a yeasty and strong aroma, pleasantly citrusy and boasting a nose of coriander. The taste is tart and zesty, with plenty of orange peel and spice. The malt is grainy and a touch biscuity, and the hops are quiet, but it’s the zesty, citrus spice that steals the show.
The beer starts malty at the tip of the tongue while bitter orange peel embraces the taste buds toward the back. That tartness rolls forward, washing your tongue tartly and scrubbing it down with peppery spice and a refreshing citrus aftertaste. The result is an airy but robust wit that is wonderfully dry.
The Ralph Steadman decorated label explains the beer’s name is a tribute to Woody Creek, CO:
Flying Dog Brewery founder George Stranahan is widely considered to be the unofficial mayor of Woody Creek, Colorado. George and his collection of social misfits known as “Woody Creatures” are the reason this mountain community has morphed into Gonzo Ground Zero. This unfiltered and traditionally spiced Wit Beer pays tribute to this hotbed of progressive thought.
Woody Creek sounds like a a good place to kick back and enjoy a beer or three, get into a debate, and then buy a few more rounds. And since this beer is only 4.8% ABV, you may even be able to enjoy a few without a discernible loss of debating skills.
