If you pass through Bloomington, IN, take a break from your inevitable tour of the Indiana University Campus and venture out to 11th Street for lunch or dinner at the Upland Brewing Company.
I discovered the Upland shortly after it opened. While attending IU, I found off-campus housing just a short walk from the brew pub, and the Upland quickly became a second home. For most of my tenure at Indiana University, the Upland served no fried foods — which was great, unless you wanted french fries. But they have been able to expand their kitchen, their menu, and even their outdoor seating.
What hasn't changed has been the quality of the beer. The Upland is probably best known for its Dragonfly IPA, but my favorite has long been Upland's Bad Elmer's Porter. I joined as a lifetime member of the Upland Mug Club during the club's inaugural year, and my mug has been filled with Bad Elmer's Porter more times than I can count. It's hard to go wrong with Upland Beer — especially during the summer, when you can sit outside and enjoy a few glasses of the award winning Upland Wheat.
Though I now live outside of Boston, MA, I always visit the Upland when I have the pleasure of being in Bloomington, IN. If you get a chance, I recommend having an IPA or an Amber with a Buffalo Burger. For extra points, add a slice of Gouda to your burger.
