Negra Modelo
By · CommentsNote: This post was written on Saturday, back dated to continue the time line properly.
Negra Modelo is my “go to” beer at a Mexican restaurant. It has a yeasty complexity which isn’t bad, and you get to pick at the foil covering the bottle’s neck while you drink the beer. Entertainment and refreshment at the same time.
And there was plenty of entertainment Friday night. I drank the beer at the infamous Cabo Wabo Cantina. It was a good time, which I can remember clearly even after several tequila shots.

Lime usually accompanies my Mexican beer, but I tried to skip the lime this time. Despite the dark bottle, I think I got a skunky beer. So in went the lime to cover up the bitterness that was turning my tongue.
I hoped to avoid Negra Modelo during this trip, simply because I wanted to try something new. With any luck, I should have something unique delivered later today.
Bohemia

This “One Beer A Day” thing really seems to be confusing the resort staff here in Mexico. I’ve developed a reputation as the guy who interrogates staff about beer, and doesn’t seem to drink any of it.
At lunch today, I explained to the bartender that I simply don’t want to drink any Mexican beer I’ve had in the past. We went down his beer list and disqualified everything. Twenty minutes later, he unexpectedly walked up to me with a Bohemia — I have no idea where he got it. Perhaps he went to another restaurant, but for all I know he ran home and opened his refrigerator.

For the rest of the week, the BeerADay.net blog is operating in Mexico. I’d be doing us all a sad injustice if I failed to post about Mexican beer and, as a bonus, tequila.
First off — it’s beautiful here in Cabo San Lucas. Warm, welcoming, and not a bit of snow. I really don’t have much more to report, because I just got in a few hours ago after a soap opera of a flight delay. (I’ll write more about that story in the “Open Bar” section of the Forum.)
Because of the delay, I didn’t have a chance to be picky about my beer for the day. The resort I’m staying at seems only to stock schlocky Mexican beer — Sol, Negra Modelo, Corona, etc. I’m hoping I can make a special request with the Concierge tomorrow — or make a run to a beer store for a few singles.

As I announced earlier today on Twitter, we’re about to embark on a BeerADay adventure, trekking to Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, for the next few days.
The plan is to post daily updates featuring Mexican beer. But I’m hoping to sneak in a bonus post about premium tequilas on Saturday or Sunday.
I usually get my post completed between 10pm and midnight, but I ask for your patience — technically, this is a vacation for me, so I may finish a post a bit late or perhaps early in the morning. Hopefully, you’ll be hearing from me at poolside. :-)
On my watchlist — I’m searching for Grupo Modelo beers such as Victoria, Estrella, León, and Montejo. If you find me reviewing Tecate, Sol, or — please, don’t let it happen — Corona, you’ll know I got myself into a bind.
Old Jubilation
By · CommentsInauguration Day 2009 is an historic day in America.
Our first black president was sworn into office, hope has been flowing abundantly, and never before in our nation’s history have some many people gathered in Washington DC without getting lobbied by Jack Abramoff.
Avery Brewing Company of Boulder, Colorado makes the perfect beer for this occasion: Ale to the Chief.
Perfect, but not currently in my Fridge — drat! (Challenging times, indeed.)
But following Obama’s example, I have decided to be pragmatic — to reach across the aisle and forge a smart compromise — by selecting another Avery brew: Old Jubilation Ale.
